Winner kick starts her new life with a Mater Prize Home

For Mater Prize Home supporter, Jane*, the news that she had won Mater Prize Home lottery No. 265 could not have come at a better time, her lucky stars having finally aligned.

When Mater Foundation’s Executive Director of Lotteries, Bruce Dennehy, called Jane, the winner of Mater Prize Home lottery No. 265, she couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing.

“I’m going to have to ask you to repeat that, because I’m not sitting down” she said.

The timing of her win could not have been better having lost her job just a few weeks before. After a tough year, the news seemed too good to be true. But she tried to contain her excitement.

“Until that registered letter came though, I was sceptical. Excited, yes. But trying so hard not to be, until I knew for sure the win was for real,” Jane said.

The only person Jane shared the news with at the time was her best friend Sue. But before they even had time to celebrate that weekend, Jane became unwell and Sue found herself rushing her to the hospital, where she remained for the next few days under observation.

“I hadn’t even received the registered confirmation letter yet, and had to ask Sue to keep a watchful eye on the mailbox,” she said.

“When it arrived, she came dancing into my hospital room with the confirmation letter in her hand. The nurses weren’t sure what to think.”

The letter confirmed Jane as the winner of Mater Prize Home lottery No. 265, a $2 million canal front home in Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast, plus a $2,000 travel and accommodation voucher. She also took home an additional book buyer prize of $60,000 car or the equivalent value worth of cashable gold bullion.

“Before this all happened I was readying myself to put my current home on the market. The plan was to downsize,” she said.

Now Jane owns a four bedroom, three bathroom Gold Coast home in with media room, study and expansive outdoor entertaining space.

“So much for downsizing” Sue laughed as she explored her friend’s new home.

Jane says her win will allow her to start afresh, “It’s an absolutely wonderful, beautifully decorated home, just perfect to start a new chapter in my life.

“Now that I have the keys in my hands I can stop pinching myself,” she said.
