Glebe’s history

Glebe has a long history dating back to eighteenth century! The Church of England was given 400 acres in 1790; the land was subdivided in 1828 and George Allen purchased 96 acres. It was only a few years later, in 1831, that George built his Toxteth Park mansion, which still stands today as part of St Scholastica’s College.

George Allen, along with his children and their partners, went on to develop and build upon the land he purchased and a lot of these properties still stand today. If you’d like to find out more, check out The Glebe Society inc or visit Glebe Walks.

When you wonder the streets of Glebe, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful Victorian cottages and terraces—this is because Glebe has one of the largest collections of these architectural delights in Australia.
